Les livres dont on se sert aujourd'hui sont mieux choisis; mais dans beaucoup d'écoles, la série est encore plus ou moins incomplète.
Les écoles de Dundee sont mal pourvues des livres nécessaires; celles des townships d'Elgin et de Godmanchester n'en ont pas en quantité suffisante, et j'y ai également remarqué l'absence de beaucoup de choses indispensables. Le besoin d'une série uniforme de livres se fait grandement sentir dans celles de Franklin, de St. Jean Chrysostôme et de Hemmingford. J'ai vu, dans ces municipalités , des enfants qui se rendaient sans livres à l'école.
Un grand nombre d'école placées sur la frontière ont une variété de livres très-nuisibles à l'instruction, en ce qu'elle nécessite la subdivision des classes et qu'elle contraint le maître à partager son attention.
[...]. Dans les écoles où j'ai trouvé des séries uniformes de livres entre les mains des enfants, ces derniers sont généralement classés d'après leur mérite ou suivant les progrès dans la lecture ou l'épellation."

This little work though complete in itself, is designed as introductory to Lovell's General Geography. We have no hesitation in recommending it to teachers; the simplicity of the language and conversational freedom in the mode of expression will not fail to please the junior class, for whose special benefit, we need scarcely add, it was written."

"Darey. - "The Students Companion or Elementary Lessons and Exercises in translating from English into French", rearranged and enlarged, by Professor P.J. Darey, M.A., p. 143, 18 mo. Montreal, Miller.
The want of a small, well arranged Manual, as a text-book, in teaching French to English pupils, had for a long time been felt by Professor Darey, who has charge of that department in the McGill Normal School. Having at last met with the "Young Students Companion," published at Philadelphia in 1853, he found that, with a few modifications, this book, would answer the purpose. Having used it himself with great satisfaction, he has prepared this new and improved edition, which in our opinion will be most valuable in assisting students to overcome the many difficulties existing in the translation of English into French."

Nous extrayons de ce livre utile, et on le voit très-répandu, l'anecdote suivante qui est en même temps une bonne leçon: «Un officier demandait une grâce au maréchal de *** et finit sa lettre par: je suis avec considération. Le maréchal lui accorda sa demande et termina ainsi réponse: au reste je vo17-05-2016tre considération pour vos inférieurs et un profond respect pour le maréchal de ***.»" (p. 178).
