CALL FOR PAPERS
IMPORTANT NOTE: The deadline for proposals is January 28, 2005.
Proposal form for papers or posters
Guidelines for authors
The Conference Planning Committee invites proposals for papers and posters for the 2005 Annual IATUL Conference.
The theme of the meeting is
Information and Innovation
Through sub-themes, we will advance understanding about the relationship between the generation, publication and
use of scientific information and the innovation agendas of governments, industry and universities worldwide. Our
interest is exploring the relationship between the advancement of knowledge and the advancement of society, how new
knowledge is made public to stakeholder communities, how it reinforces and strengthens the innovation capacity of
communities at the local, regional and national levels and what libraries can do to optimize the process.
Proposals are invited for papers on three conference sub-themes:
- Infrastructure
In this, we hope to address issues of interest to libraries with respect to funding initiatives, technological
advances and publishing. A speaker will give a keynote address and invited papers will cover topics such as
institutional repositories, cyber publishing, consortia acquisitions, usability, etc.
- People
In this, we expect to address the user culture associated with scientific publications, and the competencies
that we must cultivate and support for the end user community, as well the competencies that librarians must
develop as professional information suppliers and experts to meet future needs. Again, there will be a keynote
speaker as well as invited papers.
- Global innovation initiatives
This topic will call upon a globally representative panel of senior officials to discuss specific initiatives that are
illustrative of the impact of scholarly scientific publishing and knowledge management on innovation agendas.
Invited speakers include:
- Hal Berghel, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA
- Michael Breaks, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK
- Alex Byrne, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia
- Brian Cantwell Smith, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada
- Arthur J. Carty, National Science Advisor to the Prime Minister, Ottawa, Canada
- Blaise Champagne, NRC Industrial Materials Institute, Boucherville, Canada
- Stevan Harnad, Université du Québec à Montréal, Montreal, Canada
- David E. Schulenburger, University of Kansas, Lawrence, USA
